COUNCIL NOT TO KEEP FERRY RD. CLOCK GOING.

Responsibility for the maintenance of the public clock in the Ferry Road Post Office was disclaimed by the City Council at its meeting last evening. A report by the Electricity Committee stated: “Over a long, period this clock has been giving trouble. Last year it was reported to the committee that the clock was not of a good type and that the mechanism had reached a stage where further expense in maintenance was not - warranted.. An offer was subsequently received from a local clockmaker to overhaul it. The position was explained to him and he undertook to involve the council in no expense unless he was successful in restoring the clock to satisfactory operation. His endeavours at intervals over a long.period appear to have led to the conclusion previously reached by the Department. He suggests that the clock might now be put back into service, but asks £lO per annum for. maintaining it. A new . battery would be needed. The committee is of the opinion that this cost is. unwarranted and that further expenditure on the clock is not justified. It therefore recommends that the Post Office authorities be advised that the council is not prepared further to maintain the clock in the Ferry Road' Post Office.” The report was adopted.
