A section of half a mile of thi Main South Road, near Bankride, is to be given a coating of asphaltic oil for experimental purposes with a view to ascertaining whether this method of surfacing is suitable for adoption in the South Island. The work is being undertaken by the Main Highways Board and it is proposed to put it in hand immediately. Roads treated with asphaltic oil have proved a success in America, and as the cost is about the same as tar-sealing, it is expected that it the results on the experimental section of the Main South Road are satisfactory, the complete section from Rolleston to the Rakaia bridge will be dealt with in this manner.
