LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.

The Lyttelton Borough Council met last night. Present, the Mayor (Mr W. T. Foster), Councillors W. T. Lester, F. E. Sutton, D. Comer, M. J. Miller, R. Fenton, W. D. Gower and A. M’Donald. In reference to his claim for alleged damage to a wall in Cunningham Terrace Mr A. D. Hamilton wrote stating that the council had never made any • offer to him and asking that an offer be put in writing. The matter was referred to the Special Committee, with power to act. The Inglewood Borough Council wrote asking if the council would contribute towards the cost incurred by that council in its action against the Crown to recover rates in respect of property mortgaged to the Crown. The council had been successful in the action, which went to the Court of Appeal. The cost was £4OO, and it was maintained that the result of the decision was of benefit to alj local bodies. A grant of £2 2s was made, the Mayor stating that he thought the Inglewood County Council had taken a step in the right direction. Burgesses’ Requests. Mr L. F. Blew6tt, secretary of the Diamond Harbour Burgesses’ Association, wrote outlining the objects of the association and asking for the council’s support in all measures to advance the interests of the settlement. In a further letter the association asked for particulars of the winter time-table for the ferry service to Diamond Harbour so that residents could be circularised and the proposed time-table submitted to them. It was further asked that parcels upon which freight had been paid should be placed in the bins on the wharves provided for the purpose and not left exposed on the wharf. The attention of the council was drawn to the fact that horses, cars and motorcycles were being ridden and driven in the settlement without due consideration of the safety of pedestrians, and offenders frequently used the footpaths. The association had ample evidence of reckless and negligent driving at Diamond Harbour. It was requested that footpaths should be put in order before the winter. The letter was referred to the General Purposes Committee. In a further letter the association stated that as many residents and ratepayers of Diamond Harbour found it inconvenient to journey to Lyttelton to vote at the Municipal Elections, the association would appreciate facilities being made available in Christchurch for voters. Councillor Sutton said he was of the opinion that a booth for Lyttelton people who worked in Christchurch should be given a trial. He estimated that about 200 would vote at the Christchurch booth. If the booth was not a success they could discard it on another occasion. He moved that a booth be provided in Christchurch. The motion was carried. The District Electrical Engineer (Mi* R. G. Macgibbon) wrote in reference to an accidental shutting down of the power on February 22. The writer stated that the shut-down was unforeseen and was due to a loose connection at the Woolston sub-station.
