BROADSIDING.

ATTEMPT TO BETTER TRACK RECORD FAILS.

The Australian ‘trio—Lionel Van Praag, Harold Stevens and Cyril Anderson—showed great form on Saturday night and demonstrated conclusively that they were the best Australian riders that have been seen on the Monica Park track this season. In an attempt on the one-mile track record Van Praag registered lmin 20sec, as against Burton’s record of I min 17 3-ssec. Van Praag also won the Australian Points Match race, with Stevens second and Anderson third. Anderson secured second place in the First Division final. Two serious spills occurred. In the first race Ernie Pye struck the fence. Pye. who in the previous lap had endeavoured to pass Oakley on the outside, was close behind him in the beginning of the grandstand corner the second time round. He came up on the inside but was going too fast and collided with Oakley. His machine rebounded mto the fence. Pye struck the safetv fence broadside on and landed with his back to it. He ricked his back but was otherwise uninjured. E. Marsh was the other rider to spill. He had a comfortable lead in the second heat of the Canterbury Scratch race and spilled just before starting the slide in the top corner. The cause of the accident was uncertain. Some eye-wit-nesses state that he struck a bump in the track, others that he went into an overslide and his front tyre came off. Marsh was shaken and badly winded and received a cut on the face. (r. Wicks scored a surprise win in the First Division Handicap on his first appearance in the expert class. Reg Ranby and Jim Nesbit, from Wellington and Otago respectively, showed good form. Roth riders had been racing at New Brighton during the afternoon. Results:— FIRST DIVISION HANDICAP. (One mile.)
