RIFLE SHOOTING.
OAKES SHIELD MATCH. The second match for the Oakes Challenge Shield was fired between the holders, the Christchurch Defence Rifle Club and the challengers, the Sydenham Defence Rifle Club, on Saturday afternoon. The match which was held at Tai Tapu, took place in a strong northerly wind which blew with gale force at times. On one occasion two targets were blown out of the frames. Many misses were registered at 600 yards, the wind being so severe. Sydenham wor. by 12 points, a lead they established at the opening range. The holders had every change of making up the deficit at the final range, having only to average 27 points a man, but like Sydenham, they could not master the conditions. Scores were as fellows: —
