CRITICISM IS DIRECTED AGAINST EXPENDITURE.

(United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) RUGBY, March 13. There was a close division in the House of Commons during the debate on the supplementary estimate for the Mines Department. In the small hours a division was taken on an amendment to reduce the vote, and the Governrinent’s majority fell to five. Criticism was mainly directed against the payment of £7OOO a year to Sir Ernest Gowers, as chairman of the Coal Mines Reorganisation Commission. The amendment was defeated by 168 votes to 173. The minority included nine Labour members, and twenty Liberals voted with the Government.
