The State Athletic Commission decided to withdraw its recognition of Max Schmeling as heavyweight champion, and announced that it would consider a match between Sharkey and any outstanding opponent, preferably Young Stribling, for the title. Max Schmeling, a German, won the world’s heavyweight title from Jack Sharkey, and then returned to Germany. He has ignored insistent demands from America that he return and fight Sharkey again. Recently the New York State Athletic Commission gave Schmeling a week to make up his mind and this period has now expired.
