GENERAL CONFERENCE OF NO MORE WAR MOVEMENT

The general conference of the New Zealand No More War Movement was continued yesterday, -when remits from the various branches were considered and debated. On the question of a house-to-house campaign to educate citizens on the No- More War question it was pointed out that this gave opportunity for much useful work, and the following resolution was unanimously passed: “That the conference recommends to each branch that it institute a personal or postal house-to-house propaganda campaign in the interests of the movement.” A remit asking Parliament to arrange that prior to New Zealand engaging in or pledging the people of New Zealand to support any international conflict, a referendum on the subject be taken, was referred back for further consideration by the various branches. The afternoon session commenced with a discussion of a remit from the Waitaki branch on the subject of peace essa3's in schools. Mr Mackie explained the work done in this direction by the trustees of the Ensom essay fund, and the conference decided to co operate with them in carrying out their plans. A letter from the Minister of Defence concerning military training was read, and the following resolution was passed: “That the New Zealand No More War Movement desires to. make known to New Zealand parents that on the authority of the Minister of Defence, military training in secondary schools is now on a purely voluntary basis."
