COMPLAINTS MADE BY HIS AUDIENCE.
MAN KNOWN AS “PIT PAT” SMITH BEFORE THE COURT
Per Press Association. NAPIER, January 5. Complaints received by the police regarding an entertainment presented in the Municipal Theatre on Saturday evening led to the arrest early this morning of Franklin John Smith, aged thirty-three years, on a charge of false pretences. Smith, alias “ Pit Pot ” Smith, appeared before a Justice of the Peace in the police court later in the morning on the following charge: “ That on January 3 at Napier, with intent to defraud, he did obtain from William Neilson, the sum of nine shillings by means of certain false pretences; to wit, by falsely representing that he was a master magician known as Carter the Great.” Stating that further similar charges would be brought against Smith, Detec-tive-Sergeant Fitzgibbon, who prosecuted, applied for a remand until January 12. This was granted, bail being allowed in the sum of £IOO in self, together with two sureties of £SO each.
