SEARCHED BLAZING HOUSE FOR WOMAN
message to neighbour WRONGLY INTERPRETED. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, January 5. Fire completely gutted a five-roomed house, the property of Constable A. Nairn, at Springvale to-night. Mrs Nairn on discovering the blaze, ran outside and collapsed. One of her three children rushed to Hammond, a neighbour, saying that she wanted water, as her mother had fainted. Hammond misinterpreted the message and thought Mrs Nairn was still in the blazing house. Pie and another man named Thompson, burst in the front door and made a search—a courageous action under the circumstances, as the house was then a furnace. Constable Nairn was on duty when the fire developed.
