The first rose show was in July, ISSS, when “half the nurseries of England poured their treasures into the St James's Hall, London." It was estimated that there were then only a few hundreds of varieties of roses. To-day there are over 7000. It appears from the estimates of the most reliable authorities that the coalfields of the world cover an area of about 1,250,000 square miles.. The United States, China, Australia and India are the countries in which the area of coalfields is greatest.
