Sport And Sportsmen.

In the play-off between A. W. Gyles and A. E. Erskine for the New Zealand chess championship at Rotorua, Gyles won on the seventieth move. It was the winner’s nineteenth attempt on the championship. He had been nine times runner-up. It might be fairly accurately stated at th.s stage that the various provinces in New Zealand will be represented in the Sanders Cup contest at Dunedin in February by, the following boats:— Otago, Eileen (defender); Auckland, Avalon; Wellington, Betty; Canterbury, Colleen; and Southland, probably Rona. Eileen and Betty will be making their fourth Sanders Cup appearance, Avalon her sixth and Colleen her third appearance. The Wellington Swimming Association has decided to ask the Canterbury centre if Canterbury will compete for the Nordon Cup when its representatives are either on their way to or returning from the national championships. In the first case, the event would be held in conjunction with the Worser Bay Club’s carnival on February 28. In the latter case in conjunction with the Hutt Valley Club's carnival, on March 9. :: Throughout the match between Canterbury and Wellington, Lowry, the Wellington captain and one of the best players in the Dominion, was subject to a good deal of “ barrack ” from the bank. There was one exception. Yesterday morning he came on to the ground in “civvies” to consult Page about the ball, and the crowd raised not a murmur. Whether they did not recognise him out of cricketing clothes or not is uncertain, but certainly they made no comment. It would have been all the same to the capable Wellington and New Zealand skipper. It takes more than “ barrack ” to upset him. The Auckland fielding against Otago showed an improvement on that in the Canterbury match (says a report from Dunedin). Wensley and Mathieson were frequently conspicuous for smart work. It was unfortunate for Hunt that he received an injury on another finger. He had an X-ray examination and the finger is badly bruised. He has been ordered to take a spell for a month by a medical adviser. Thakobau kept wickets well, considering his lack of practice, and, under the circumstances, it was fortunate he was in the team. Mathieson can keep wickets, but he would have been very much missed from the bowling crease.
