GARAGE STOLEN FROM RESIDENCE.
man to stand trial ON CHARGE OF THEFT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 5. On December 9 fire broke out in a fourteen-roomed house in Shortland Street. The owner was absent in England, but ten days later, when her brother went to the house he found that all the internal fittings and the garage had been removed. The garage had been removed bodily. To-day Leslie Clifton Arthur Payne, a labourer, was committed for trial on a charge of stealing timber and fittings valued at £350. Evidence was given by a man that he and two other men were employed for several days in demolishing the house. A man who gave the name of Payne said that he had authority to pull down the house. Payne did not work himself, but called each morning and gave instructions. The police produced a statement alleged to have been made by accused admitting that he knew he was not authorised to demolish the house.
