AMID WILDERNESS OF ICE AND SNOW.
MAWSON UNEXPECTEDLY FINDS SOME FRIENDS. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received January 5, 10.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 5. Latest advices from Sir Douglas Mawson state: “The Discovery is now in the open pack on the 142nd meridian, about 50 miles north of the Antarctic coast. “A howling blizzard, with thick falling snow, is at present dominating' activities. In such a wind and amongst glaciers and heavy pressure ice, the greatest vigilance is required to preserve the ship from damage. “A new feature developed when a multitude of birds were observed feeding off a portion of a whale carcase, indicating whaling activities in the neighbourhood. By means of wireless we located the Kosmos 60 miles to the westward. Coal was needed, and the captain of the Kosmos said that he could spare 50 tons. As we stood by a large tanker arrived from Europe, to take back a shipment of oil. Thus from our icy wilderness we suddenly found ourselves amongst a fleet of ships and a hive of industry.”
