SCOTTISH EXPRESS JUMPS THE RAILS.

FIRST TWO COACHES TELESCOPED IN CRASH. Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received January 5, 10 a.m.) LONDON, January 4. The engine of the noon express from Edinburgh to London yesterday leaped the rails at a sharp curve near Carlisle, burying its nose in loose stones on the embankment. The first two coaches crashed into the tender and telescoped, killing four and injuring twelve. The bodies of two men and a woman were recovered from the wreckage with the aid of doctors, nurses and hundreds of helpers. Both lines were blocked, necessitating a diversion of traffic. Apart from the six seriously injured, fifty passengers suffered from shock and minor injuries, and received treatment at the hospital. Soldiers from the garrison who were playing a cup tie match in an adjacent field accompanied the spectators and participated in the rescues. It is believed that frosty rails caused the engine to jump the metals. According to a spectator, it. absolutely jumped into the air. Curiously the two men who were victims were railway employees going to London. The third victim was a woman, whose two sons were injured. A report that a child was killed was erroneous. Only six of those injured were detained in hospital.
