SCRUB FIRES OCCUR AT SOUTH BRIGHTON.

Several scrub fires occurred at South Brighton over the week-end and the fire brigade had a busy time suppressing the outbreaks. Property was endangered on one occasion and some residents removed their most valuable articles of furniture.

Little difficulty was experienced by the New Brighton Fire Brigade in suppressing a scrub fire on a block in Pine Avenue and Estuary Road at 2 a.m. on Saturday, but at G p.m. on the same day fire broke out in three places on both sides of Pine Avenue, and the firefighters had a busy time. At 11 o’clock yesterday morning there was another outbreak; this time in Estuary Road, opposite the South Brighton School. A more serious fire broke out in the same place at 2.30 p.m., destroying several acres of scrub and alarming a few residents, who removed seme furniture. The brigade, aided by a small band of volunteer workers, did not extinguish the blaze until 7 p.m. Hundreds of mice and hedgehogs were to be seen seurrving from the burning scrub.
