CYCLIST KNOCKED UNDER A LORRY.

DOG HIT FRONT WHEEL, THROWING HIM ON ROAD

Knocked from his bicycle by a dog, Robert Bainbridge Winter, a thirteen-year-old boy, was run over by a lorry on Friday morning, and died on Saturday morning in the Christchurch Hospital. At the inquest held on Saturday evening, the Coroner (Mr E. D. Mosley) returned a verdict of death from shock following injuries received when deceased was accidentlly run over by a lorry. No blame was attachable to the driver. Douglas Henry Day, a farmer, residing at 225, Shirley Road, said that he was driving a two-horse lorry along Quinn’s Road between 9.30 and 10 a.m. on Friday. When several yards from the corner he saw a boy on a bicycle accompanied by a dog coining towards him. Witness was standing on the front of the lorry. As the boy came level with witness, the dog hit the front wheel of the bicycle, and witness saw the boy fall. Witness stopped immediately and saw the boy struggle up and fall again on the road. Witness jumped down and the boy was able to walk with his assistance to a house nearby. Witness went away, but returned and waited while the boy was taken to hospital. The horses were moving at a sharp walk at the time. It was a narrow road and witness was travelling in the centre. Dr C. R. Lambert, house surgeon at the Christchurch Hospital, said that he attended the boy when he was brought in at 10.40 a.m. on Friday. Fie was suffering from shock and complained of severe abdominal pains. The signs suggested were those of severe internal injury. An operation was considered necessary, and after the shock had been treated, the boy was operated on at about 12.30 by Dr Davidson. Ilis condition after the operation became more severe, and he was taken back to the ward. He improved slightly during the afternoon, but later became worse again, and he gradually sank. He died at 2.35 a.m. on Saturday. The cause of death was shock, following severe internal abdominal injury.
