M.C.C. COLLAPSE IN DRAMATIC MANNER

ENGLAND COMPELLED TO FOLLOW ON IN TEST.

< United, Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) CAPE TOWN, January 3. The attendance to-day was 10,000 when the Test match between Africa and the M.C.C. team was continued. The weather was warm and overcast, with the wicket easier, though there were one or two badly worn spots. Hammond and LeyTand continued staunchly and steadily to repair the earlier damage, but as the attack was ineffective, the batsmen this morning became more enterprising. This promising partnership was unexpectedly broken by Hammond attempting a hard straight drive and M’Millan snapping up a low ball brilliantly. Hendren was unorthodox and earned the crowd’s appreciation for the plucky manner in which he flung caution to the winds and went for the bowling, severely punishing the attack. He thereby gradually improved the situation. Bell, after several innocuous spells, suddenly struck deadly form after lunch, resulting in the dramatic collapse of the M.C.C. side. He dismissed Leyland, Turnbull and Chapman in succession with identical fast offswingers. His analysis at that stage was: Seven overs, 2 maidens, 10 runs, three wickets. The dismissal of Hendren, who hit eight fours, by one of the worst balls of the day. proved the turning point, though Voce, Tate and White made spirited and desperate attempts to save a follow on. Deane persevered with slow spin bowlers, M’Millan and Balaskas. The remaining batsmen were impetuous and were tempted to hit out against the slow bowlers, but after some breezy knocks which delighted the onlookers, they speedily succumbed and England was compelled to follow on. Hammond and Wyatt opened with caution and took no risks despite the tired bowling, though the former, when he had made four runs, gave a chance i Scores:— SOUTH AFRICA.
