PERSONAL.

VICE-REGAL. Their Excellencies the Governor-Gen-eral and Lady Bledisloe who will be accompanied by Captain and Mrs Vaughan Hughes and Major and Mrs Bathurst, and attended by Sir John Hanham, Bart, A.D.C. will leave Wellington this evening for official visits to the South Island. From January 5 to 12 their Excellencies will be at Dunedin, and will then visit Gore, Ijavercargill, Westport, Reefton, Greymouth and Hokitika. After spending a few days at the Franz Josef glacier they will return to Wellington on February 11. Messrs A. Hart (Timaru) and J. Dunlop (Irwercargill) are guests at the Clarendon Hotel. The Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) and Mrs Archer leave to-day for a holiday at Lowcliffe-, returning to Crhist church on January 28. Dr D. E. Orchard left last evening for the north to take up his position as house surgeon at the New Plymouth Public Hospital. Mr L. F. de Berry, head master of the West Christchurch School, is continuing his holidays at Timaru after attending the W.E.A. Summer School at Waimate. Professor A. H. Tocker, of Canterbury College, is on a holiday visit to the Nelson district. Later he goes to the West Coast, returning to Canterbury via Arthur’s Pass. Mr D. Braun, of Valparaiso, principal of the large Chilean meat-exporting firm of Sara Braun, is at present in Christchurch in the course of a pleasure tour of the Dominion. He is staying at Warner’s Hotel, and will remain here for about a fortnight. Guests at the United Service Hotel include Messrs H. Carden, M. H. Yock (Auckland) and Robert Arlow (Wellington). The Rev J. Russell Grave, who returned from a world tour by the Niagara this week, will be the preacher at the Colombo Street Baptist Church tomorrow evening, in the absence of the Rev J. K. Archer, who is on holiday. Brigadier F. W. Burton, officer-in-charge of the Christchurch Division of the Salvation Army, has received notice of his promotion to the position of Lieut~/iant-Colonel of the Army in New Zealand. Brigadier Burton, who is at present at the Young People’s Camp in Temuka, has already received a host of congratulations from all parts of the Dominion.

Mr Victor French has been appointed as superintendent to the Presbyterian Social Service Association in succession to the Rev F. Rule. For some years Mr French has been in charge of the boys at Flock House, and was at one time travelling secretary to the New Zealand Presbyterian Bible Class Union. He has also been connected with the Y.M.CA., and has generally had a long experience in youth work. Mr Rule is leaving for Auckland shortly, and is making arrangements to visit his two sons, one of whom lives in Kentucky and the other in Arizona.
