STOLE TWO CARS, DAMAGING BOTH.
EXPLOIT OF TWO YOUTHS ON NEW YEAR’S EVE.
To steal two cars in one evening and leave them both smashed up against a telegraph post is alleged to have been the exploit of two young men on New Year’s Eve. The first car was taken from outside the Christchurch railway station between 4.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. on New Year's Eve. It was found later by a City Council traffic inspector in Ford Road, Opawa, with the rear near side wheel smashed off and the front wheel punctured. The car had evidently run into a post.
Two young men, who were said to have been seen in the first car, were seen shortly afterwards by Mr Snook, of 143, Opawa Road, getting into his Essex tourer, which was standing in Opawa Road. They drove off and Mr Snook chased the car, but they got away. Early this morning Mr Snook recovered his car from Edgeware Road, St Albans. A front mudguard was crumpled, evidently as a result of another collision with a post. The petrol tank was empty.
