Fishing in the Selwvn River is, at present, very poor. During the holidays few fish were caught in the river, and the baskets taken on Lake Ellesmere were very small. Large runs of silveries are in the river, and consequently the fish are not taking the bully. When the silveries leave the river, which they should do near the end of the month> good sport will be obtained with the fly. Owing to the outlet of Lake Ellesmere having been opened recently, the water is now very low. Mr J. Digby, the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society’s ranger, said yesterday that he had not seen the river so low for many years, and that there were more silveries i n it than usual. “ What trout are being taken,” said Mr Digby, “ are in excellent condition, and when the fly fishing commences fine baskets are sure to be caught.”
