WILD CATTLE CAUSE MUCH EXCITEMENT.
TAKE CHARGE OF FARM NEAR WELLINGTON. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON. January 2. Unusual excitement and not a little inconvenience to many people have been caused by the animals used at the Boxing Day rodeo held at the Kilbirnie Speedway ground. After the show, the management sought to get their nineteen head of cattle out of the stadium. The animals were placed in a paddock overlooking Miramar Valley, but it was not suitable and during the night all except one broke loose and took charge of a farm at the head of the vallev; The remaining animal stayed in the paddock, but charged everyone who went near it. The herd gored a heifer and charged a farmer, and remained in possession for three days. At midnight on Monday the management started off to drive the animals seven miles to Thomdon station for transport to Auckland. The distance was covered in a little over an hour. Around the foreshore the cattle frequently took the most direct route over boats, boatsheds and gardens. On arrival at Thorndon, one steer was missing, so the city ranger went back and located it, but was promptly charged. He called for assistance from Thorndon. The animal then jumped into the harbour and swam five miles to Ngahauranga in five hours. On landing it held up a stock train. Another steer, which was left in a football ground, charged all who approached and was abandoned over night. It is now posted as missing.
