MAORI LEAVES FOR AKAROA EXCURSION.
HEAVY BANK OF FOG ALONG PENINSULA. The ferry steamer Maori left Lyttelton at 9.10 this morning for Akaroa with 1000 excursionists on board. Long before intending passengers were permitted on board there was a large crowd at the foot of each gangway. This was before the arrival of the special train from Christchurch, which consisted of twenty-one carriages and contained nearly 750 passengers. The train arrived at Lyttelton at 8.55, and as soon as the passengers embarked the vessel left for Akaroa. The sea was quite calm and there was just the faintest nor’-east breeze. At 10 a.m. it was reported from the heads that there was a thick fog-bank lying alongside the peninsula, obscuring the Maori from the view of those on land. The vessel was expected to arrive at Akaroa at noon, and to leave for the return trip to Lyttelton at 2.45, arriving at 5.30.
