NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, January 2. Tenakoe, favourite for the Goodwood Handicap, was beaten out of a place after being up in the lead till the straight was entered. He carried £IO7O, Goshawk carried £874, and Love Song £l9O. The early leaders -were Llanore and Tenakoe, who led into the straight from Sir Russell, Vertigern, Love Song, and Flying Prince. In the run home, Love Song came through to win comfortably by a length. Flying Prince beat Vertigern by a head for second money, with Llanore, Tenakoe and Grand Tea next. Goshawk was never in the firing line. Crossing the top, Royal Tea broke a fetlock joint and had to be destroyed. In the Sylvia Handicap, the Baro-scope-Princess Bede bracket carried £1636, Persham £1413, and Royal Artist £703. Baroscope, Cape Gold and Fedora were quickest away. Fedora soon ran to the front and led across the top from Princess Bede, Baroscope, Persham and Royal Artist. At the home turn, Princess Bede fell and Fedora led into the straight from Persham, Baroscope and Cape Gold. Baroscope did best in the run home and won by three-quarters of a length from Persham, with Fedora a neck away. Speedmint was fourth, followed by Cape Gold, Royal Artist, Speedfast, Limeen, Exaggeration and Brazanna. For the Grandstand Handicap Hunting Cry was made a solid favourite, carrying £2229. He never got in the picture and was always near the tail of the field. Corinax carried £l2lO, while Silvermine was third fancy with £767. Lucy Rose, who finished second, carried £SOB. Passing the stand the first time Lucy Rose was showing in front from Silvermine, Eager Rose, Corinax, Hunting Cry, Mosque and Jaloux, while My Own was pulled up and did not continue on in the race. Along the back Lucy Rose was piloting the field just clear of Silvermine, Mosque, Eager Rose, Gay Cockade, Sir Mond, Corinax, Hunting Cry, Count Palatine and Jaloux. Mosque was in front crossing the top from Gay Cockade, but the latter then dashed to the front and was well clear turning into the straight from Silvermine, Mosque, Lucy Rose, Eager Rose and Corinax. In the straight Gay Cockade looked like seeing it out, but both Corinax and Lucy Rose threw out strong challenges, and in a great finish Corinax got the decision by a neck from Lucy Rose, with Gay Cockade a neck away. Silvermine was fourth, followed by Spearmiss, Count Palatine, Eager Rose, Mosque, Sir Mond and Jaloux.

Good acceptances have been received for the second day of the Wairarapa Racing Club’s summer meeting to-morrow, and keen racing should again be witnessed. The presence of horsemen who have been riding at Ellerslie and Marton may bring about some reversals in the form shown by horses yesterday.
