FANCY DRESS DANCE AT HOTEL FEDERAL.
Under gay decorations, balloons, streamers, coloured lights and beautiful flowers, the New Year festivities at the Federal Hotel were opened by a table tennis tournament on Tuesday evening. Over fifty entries were received, and as a result of the excellent handicapping of Miss Stanbridge and Mr Warne Pearse many hard battles were fought. The prize, for the winner, given by Mr Rawson, went to Miss Howe, who played consistently throughout. New Years Eve saw the lounge filled with weird and wonderful figures who had assembled for the fancy dress ball. Prizes were given by Mr and Mrs T. G. Lewis and Mr Rawson for the two most original costumes. Mr and Mrs Chappell and Mr Blair acted as judges. After the judging both guests and the house staff adjourned to the jazz room for dancing.
Light refreshments were provided by Mr and Mrs Lewis, and a flashlight photograph was taken of the group. On the stroke of midnight all joined hands and sang “Auld Lang Syne.” Mr Lewis wished all the guests the compliments of the season, the wishes being reciprocated by Mr Abercrombie. The prizes were won by Mr M’Dougall, who made a most realistic Baby even to the dummy and bib; Mr Abercrombie, who was arrayed as a High Church’ Dignitarjr and whose portly presence dismayed even the M« phistopheles present.; Mrs Rowe, who represented the Black Cat Art Union; and Miss Elsie Hurle3', Sinbad the Sailor.
