SOCIAL GATHERINGS

Coming-of-Age Party. An enjoyable time was spent at the Hastings Street Hall recently, when Mr and Mrs J. Cockroft entertained a number of friends to celebrate the coming of age of their eldest daughter, Isobel. The evening was spent in games, competitions and dancing. Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Earl (piano), Miss Hermont (violin) and Mr Payne (banjo). Extras were played by Mr M. Cook. Mr J. M’Donald was M.C. The supper-room and tables were decorated in shades of pink and mauve, the birthday cake being surmounted by twenty-one tiny kewpies. The customary golden key was presented to Miss Cockroft. Competitions were won by Mrs Moultrie, Miss Earl, Mr Cockroft, Percy Smith and Stan Coton. Items were contributed by Mr F. Browning (ventriloquist) and Mr D. Moultrie (songs). The popularity of Mr and Mrs Waugh and Miss Waugh was shown by the large attendance at the Marshland Hall on Thursday evening, when they were tendered a public farewell. Mr Leslie J. Wilson presided, and, at an interval in the amusements, called on Mr Chisnall to make a presentation to Mr and Mrs Waugh and Miss Waugh. Mr Waugh, he said, had been connected with all movements for the furtherance of Marshland, while Mrs Waugh had been active in the Plunket Society and on the Library Committee. Various speakers eulogised Mr Waugh’s activities in the district. Mrs Roberts, on behalf of the Plunket Society, presented Mrs Waugh with a beautiful vase, and wished her all future happiness. Mr Chisnall, in presenting Mr and Mrs Waugh with a beautiful clock, said that while they were losing good residents all wished them success. Miss Waugh was the recipient of a brush and comb set. The ladies of the Plunket Society supplied supper. Surprise Party. On Tuesday evening a surprise party visited “ Gowan Lea,” to show their goodwill to Mr and Mrs Waugh. The party consisted of near neighbours on Hill’s Road. Those present were: Mr and Mrs Rogers, Mrs Jack, Mr Gordon Jack. Miss M. Jack and Mrs Whitworth, Messrs G. A. B. and F. Dobby, Misses G. and S. Dobby, Mr Lynton Smith, Mr Muir Clark, Mr and Mrs . Alan M’Dermid and Miss Joan M’Dermid, Mr and Mrs Geo. Watson, Mr Laurie Kingston, Mr and Mrs J. Schimanski. Games and music made the time pass quickly, and after supper Mr Rogers made presentations to the Waugh family. Mr Lynton Smith also spoke. Farewell Evening. A social evening was held recently in the Rechabites’ Hill, St Asaph Street, under the auspices of the Canterbury Caithness Association, to bid farewell to one of their members, Mrs Sutherland, of Belfast, prior to her departure to her native land. The president, Mr Robertson, presented Mrs Sutherland, on behalf of the association, with a travelling rug, and wished her a pleasant journey and good fortune for the future. The time passed pleasantly with songs and dancing. A special item was presented by Mrs D. Lockie. Kia- Ora Club’s Dance. A pleasant evening was spent recently in Rickerby’s Hall, Papanui, when the newly-formed Kia Ora Club held its first dance. A varied programme had been arranged by the committee, Messrs L. Wray, L. Poole, A. Foster and A. Claridge. The supper arrangements were carried out by Misses E. Wray, A. Quinn and I. Watson. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss P. Wilkinson and Mr S. Gay, and a Monte Carlo one-step by Miss M. Murphy and Mr M. Oates. Among those present were: Mrs H. V. Ross, Misses M. Murphy (2), P. Wilkinson, R. Wilkinson, M. Googin, B. Simpson, I. Barnett, E.
