TRAMWAY CHANGES.
'TMIE personnel of the Tramway -®- Board underwent only onechange in yesterday’s election, Mr John Wood, who has served the Riccarton district faithfully, with a sound knowledge of tramway Organisation, being defeated by Mr A. A. M’Lachlan, a young lawyer with a strong personal following in the district, who may be expected to provide a focussing point for more progressive thought in regard to tramway policy. The election was notable for the defeat of the five Labour candidates for the central sub-district, and the figures show a big enough margin of anti-Labour votes to ensure that under the first-past-the-post system no Labour representation could be secured. The new Board will face the most difficult financial period in the history of the tramways, and a serious effort should be made, in view of the over-capitalisation of the system, to put it on a sounder basis.
