GAVE HIMSELF UP TO THE POLICE.
CYCLE THIEF SENT TO GAOL FOR THREE MONTHS Edward Francis Nickolls stole a bicycle; when he heard the police were inquiring for him, however, he went to the Central Station and gave himself up. Mr Mosley, S.M., before whom he appeared this morning, sentenced Nickolls to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. He was charged with the theft of a bicycle, valued at £B, the property of Edward Billings. The accused pleaded guilty. The Chief-Detective explained that Nickolls, who was a cook, took the bicycle from outside an auction room and sold it to a man in St Albans the same afternoon. When he heard, however, that the police were looking for him, he went to the police station and surrendered himself. The Chief-Detec-tive asked that this should be taken into consideration. “ I’ve been unemployed and have not had sufficient tucker,” said the accused, when asked for an explanation. “ I have tried to go straight, but I couldn’t get work and didn’t know what to do.” The Magistrate reminded accused that he had a bad record, and senNickolls to three months’ imprisonment.
