LABOUR PREPARES FOR GENERAL ELECTION.
CANDIDATES SELECTED FOR SEATS IN AUCKLAND (Special to the “Star. ) AUCKLAND, November 27. Although the election is. in normal circumstances, almost a year away, the Labour Party.is giving its active attention to the selection of its candidates and the nominations from which the Party’s standard-bearers in the ten city and suburban seats will be chosen closed to-night. The nominations later came before the Labour Representation Committee, but no announcement was made. Lt is expected that the ultimate result will be to give official endorsement for their respective seats to Messrs W. E. Parry, M.P. for Auckland Central , M. J. Savage, M.P. for Auckland West H. G. R. Mason, M.P. for Auckland Suburbs, and W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau. Of the remaining six seats. Labour is most sanguine of recapturing Grev Lynn, where in 192 S Mr J, S. Fletcher, then a United Party supporter, but now an Independent unseated Mr F. N. Bartram (Labour) by a margin of 64 votes. At the same election Mr J.'A. Lee (Labour) was unseated for Auckland East by the Hon J. B. Donald (United), the margin being only 37 votes. It is stated that on this occasion Mr Bartram and Mr Lee have both been nominated ior selection as the I/abcmr candidate for Grey Lynn. Although it is believed that Mr Lee has also been nominated for Auckland East, his personal preference is said to be for Grey Lynn. As for the other seats Eden Roskill Waitemata and Parnell each of the Labour candidates was heavily defeated in 1928 and the result of the subsequent by-election in Parnell did not encourage' the hope that the party would succeed there in the immediate future Although it is stated that nominations are numerous for several of the seats, it is believed that little “new blood" is offering.
