WELL-KNOWN TENNIS PLAYER ENGAGED.
Miss Nancy M’Dougall, whose en* gagement to Mr. Ivan A. Seay is announced, is the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs R. E. M’Dougall, of Papanui Road. Miss M’Dougall, though not so prominent in tennis circles as Mr Seay has been, is nevertheless a player of considerable skill. Golf has also been, a pastime which she has followed with success. Her father was responsible for giving to the City the fine new Art Gallery, the site for which is being prepared in the Botanic Gardens. Mr Seay, who was born in Christchurch, is a son of Mr and Mrs W. N. Seay, of Church Lane, Merivale. He was educated at the Addington primary school, of which his father was head master, and at the Timaru Boys* High School. Later he attended Canterbury College for three years, taking accountancy subjects. Mr Seay joined the firm of Messrs Caygill, Newburgh and Co., public accountants, and three years ago went into business on his own, in the firm of Messrs Cade and Seay, manufacturers’ representatives and importers. Tennis enthusiasts through New Zealand have come to know Mr Seay, who was Canterbury champion in 1928, and was. with Mr Geoff. Ollivier, runner-up for the New Zealand championship doubles for two years. He won the Canterbury title in 1925, but was unable to defend it the following year owing to illness. Mr Seay intends entering for the provincial championships this season. He commenced his tennis at an early age, and his first outstanding victory was the winning of the New Zealand junior championship at Auckland in 1920. in which year Tilden attended there for the Davis Cup matches. The promise shown by the young player did not escape the eye of Tilden. who described him as a coming champion. The New Zealand University championship fell to Mr Seay in 1923, and in 1925 and 1926 he partnered Mr Geoff. Ollivier for the New Zealand championship doubles. They were runners-up on each occasion. Mr Seav has shown promise also as a runner When a boy he was second in the 100yds Canterbury championship at Lancaster Park, and second in the BSoyds championship of the Timaru Boys’ High School.
