“ GOT DRUNK AND HIT HIS WIFE.”

LABOURER WILL SERVE 14 DAYS’ HARD LABOUR. Clements Bell, a labourer, got drunk last evening. Later he went home in a bad temper and assaulted his wife. His excuse did not appeal to Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., before whom he appeared this morning, and in consequence he will go to gaol to serve a sentence of fourteen days’ with hard labour. On a second charge of wilfully damaging a cup and saucer belonging to Elizabeth Temple, the accused was ordered to pay Is 3d damages, in default 2-1 hours’ imprisonment. Sub-Inspector O’Hara stated that accused and his wife lived in a room in Ilagley Avenue. Last evening, the accused went home in a drunken condition and hit his wife about the head, lie had also done the damage complained of. The two women were alone in the house and being frightened, sent for the police. It was accused’s second offence within a short period. “What have you to say for yourself?” inquired Mr Mosley. Accused: “I was drunk, sir.” “And in a bad temper. So you hit your wife?” “Well, that’s no excuse for a man,” said the Magistrate. “We’ll have to cure it.”
