“ CANNOT UNDERSTAND SOME GIRLS,” SAYS S.M

CONVICTS YOUNG WOMAN FOR FALSE PRETENCES. “It seems extraordinary to me how some girls, to satisfy their craving for amusement, and so on, overstep the bounds of honesty,” said Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. A girl aged 18 years, whose name was suppressed, was convicted on a charge of obtaining from Chisnall and Stewart Ltd. a pair of shoes valued at £1 17s 6d, by falsely representing that she had authority from another woman to charge the amount to her account. The accused was ordered to come up for sentence in three months if called upon. The girl, who was represented by Mr Lascelles, pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective Carroll said the girl had been very foolish as there was no need for her to resort to such means. She had a good home and a good position. Mr Lascelles said that the girl was employed at one of the large drapery stores and her character up to the time of the offence had been most trustworthy. She wanted the shoes to match a frock she had procured and had been ashamed of herself ever since. “I do not think it is necessary to place her on probation,” said the Magistrate. “Her surroundings are of the best and the girl is not likely to commit an offence again.”
