MR HAYWARD DID NOT SAY FOUR INSPECTORS.
OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON DEBATABLE SUBJECT. The statement attributed to Mr W. Hayward, in a letter to the “Star", yesterdav, that there were only four ticket inspectors employed by the Tramway Board, was not made bv Mr Hayward, but by Mr E. H. Andrews. In making this explanation to-day, however, Mr Hayward repeated that according to a statement prepared for him regarding inspectors and their duties, Mr Andrews’s contention was correct. There were twelve inspectors, whose duties, spread over the tramway day of nineteen hours, were as follows: .Ticket Inspectors.—Two for each shift 4 Dispatchers at Carshed. —One for each shift. These men not only sign on the staff and see that they get away to time, but also “sign off” at midnight 2 Motor Inspector and Instructor (also effects repairs on road) 1 Inspectors have to have one day off in seven. A man has to be used to relieve them. He does other work 1 Inspectors also have annual holidays as other men, and their work has to be done by a relief man, who does other work as well .. 1 Inspector to sign men on and off in town shed, also assist in ticket work and assists in traffic control 1 Traffic Inspectors in Square.—One each shift 2 Total 12
