PRETTY FROCKS SEEN AT MISS CARVERS CONCERT.

Music-lovers enjoyed a special treat last evening at the Caledonian Ilall, where a musical recital was given by Miss Kathleen Garven, assisted by Miss Nellie Hayward, pianist, Mr Bernard Barker, violinist, and arists from their .studios. The platform, a picturesque scene in green with bowls of arum lilies and white flowers made an effective setting for the lovely colourful frocks of the women soloists. Miss Kathleen Garven wore a handsome gown of gold metallic lace mounted over deep rose crepe de chine, falling in a long wide panel on one side. The wide sleeves, edged with brack chiffon, fell from the elbows to a point under the wrists. Offsetting the beautiful lace, black chiffon velvet was artistically draped from one shoulder to form the long skirt, which, in an even hemline, fell to the instep and heels. A long black velvet train, lined with rose, gave a graceful finish to the beautiful gown. Miss Nellie Hayward wore a pretty sleeveless frock of maize georgette with over-bodice of net embroidered in sequins and diamante and falling to form a long panel at the back Miss Anita Graham’s dainty frock was of primrose georgette, tiny frills trimming the sleeveless bodice, from V'hich the skirt fell in deep scalloped hemline, with circular side panels, also deeply scalloped. Mrs Leeming wore an attractive cherry red georgette frock, the bodice being pintucked and the circular skirt falling from a narrow shaped hip band to the ankles, and dipping to the heels. Mrs Bennett’s lovely frock was of deep rose souple satin, with very long circular skirt and rucked bodice. A large bow was draped on one side at the hipline. Mrs Brosnahan wore a pretty lacquer red frock, the bodice being of ‘faconne and the two-tiered skirt of georgette falling in deep points. Miss Eunice James made her first appearance in an attractive frock of white souple satin, with long circular skirt. A cluster of <fleep red roses on the shoulder of the fitting bodice gave a pretty touch of colour to the white frock. Miss Peggy M’Greevy’s frock of pale rose taffeta was patterned in rose and black, the bodice laced with black ribbon, the two-tie»ed skirt dipping at the back. Miss Nan Ellis wore floral chene taffeta in old rose shades, the long bodice having a narrow belt and the skirt falling ankle-length. Miss Ethel Rattray’s frock was of apple-green crepe de chine, with panels of silver lace and a narrow belt clasped with a diamante buckle. Miss Eileen Maher wore a frook of mushroom lace over pink satin, the skirt dipping slightly at the sides. Miss Marian Hayward’s frock of Princess Mary blue taffeta with tiny spot, had paniers falling below the skirt at the sides. A pink rose gave relief to the rucked bodice. Many beautiful bouquets were passed up to the artists. The proceeds of the recital will be given to the “Scholarship Fund” (tenable at St Bede’s College) for boys attending Christchurch schools.

It was mentioned at yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board that Staff Nurse Fisher had been granted eight months’ leave to enable her to take widwifery training. Nurse Margaret Barnett has been released from duty for eighteen months, so that she may go to England to take a post-graduate course. Sister Glenn, of the Kaikoura Hospital, has taken up a post as nurse with the Wharanui Railway Camp, and her post in the hospital has been filled by Miss Smith. If you scald the feet of stockings when you are washing them, 3 r ou’ll find that the wearer’s feet will never become sore, as they so often do when the feet get hot.
