LATE SOCIAL.

STREET COLLECTION FOR MRS HERBERT MEMORIAL. The late Mrs Annie E. Herbert, who for a number of years worked unceasingly to alleviate the distress amongst the poor and needy of Christchurch, was a woman greatly respected and loved by all who. came in contact with her. In order that her work shall not be forgotten, her fellow workers are raising funds with the object of adding an extra wing at the Jubilee Home, in her memory. To aid ttis fund a streetcollection, organised by Mrs Wilson and Mrs Holmes, assisted by Mrs J. R. Evans, Miss Mabel Smith, Sister D. Gill and Miss De Veaux. Mr Barker and Mr Felton, was held to-day, and met with a splendid response. The following associations were represented amongst the collectors:—Social Welfare Guild, St John’s Ambulance, W.C.T.U., Ladies’ Sanatorium Guild, Jubilee Home, Burwood Girls* Home, Essex Home, Waltham Orphanage and the Christchurch Kindergarten Associa. tion. All over the town these helpers were to be seen selling the white badges with the printed inscription, “Annie E. Herbert Memorial.” A produce, flower and cake stall was erected in Victoria Square under the management of Mrs P. W. Reeves, Mrs Vernon Stapp and Mrs J. H. Pugh. Up till midday the stall had been well patronised and was reladen with dainties for the afternoon. Donations were received from Mrs R. E. McDougall and Messrs J. Ballantj-ne and Co. Morning and afternoon tea were dis-’ pensed by Mrs C. A. Fraer and a staff of helpers, to the many collectors.
