At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Merchant Service Guild yesterday morning, reference was marie to the removal cf the Pencarrow high-level light to Baring Head. The committee felt that it would be lacking in its duty if it did not express, on behalf of the seafaring community, its thanks and appreciation to Mr Eric Riddiford for the very generous gift which has made it possible to erect a light on Baring Head. The guild, which, represents the masters and officers trading on the coast, lias always held the opinion that Baring Head is the ideal position for a lighthouse to assist masr.tr mariners approaching Wellington fiom the southward or eastward. The headland is a very suitable height ior a lighthouse, and, when other points are obscured, is always clear. Several vessels coming from the southward have observed the headland in the nick of time, and have thereby, saved trouble. The guild considers that t-'e Pencarrow l:ght is too far in the bight for the reason that if a large vessel gets too close inshore in an endeavour to pick up the light, and fails, there is very little room in which to turn back. The light on Baring Head, it was stated, will enable vessels from the north and east to shorten their distance v/ith safety and thus save time. The meeting passed the following resolution:—“That the Wellington Merchant Service Guild write to Mr Eric Riddiford expressing their thanks and appreciation for his generous gift of land at Baring Head for the new lighthouse site, and for his keen interest in the welfare of the men of the mercantile marine.”
