NOT ELIGIBLE TO BE CLUB MEMBER.
ROWING.
POSmON OF GEORGE WELCH, AKAROA CAPTAIN The position of George Welch, a professional sculler who, it was reported had been appointed captain of the Akaroa Rowing Club was discussed by the Canterbury Rowing Association last evening. The chairman said that the question of Welch’s reinstatement should have been dealt with at the annual meeting but had been overlooked. The oversight would, however, be adjusted. Mr Atack said that Welch had been appointed captain of the Akaroa Club. As things stood he was not eligible to be a member of an amateur club. A member said that there was no rule to prevent a professional from being a member of an amateur club. Mr Atack said that the matter should be gone into further. Mr Hobbs said that there was nothing In the rules to say that a professional should not be a member of an amateur club, though that was implied. A search of the rules, however, revealed that a professional in any branch of sport was not eligible for membetfehip in an amateur club. Mr Hobbs suggested writing to the Akaroa Club pointing out that Welch would ha\*e to stand down In the meantime. This was agreed to.
