NO MONEY, NOWHERE TO GO, AND NO FRIENDS.
William Joseph Allen, aged thirtysix years, and Francis Edward Thornton, aged fifty-two years, were convicted in the Magistrate’s Court to-day and sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labour for being found without, lawful excuse on premises at 70, Fendalton Road last evening, but in circumstances that did not disclose any intention to commit an offence. Both pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector O’Hara said that the men were found at 11 p.m. sitting on the verandah of the house. They had a bottle of methylated spirits with them, and were under the influence of liquor. Mr Tracy, who appeared for Thornton, said that the two men had no money, nowhere to go, and no friends.
On ordinary work, not loan work, the Works Committee had overspent to the extent of £2OOO, said Councillor J. W. Beanland, chairman of the committee, at last night’s meeting of the City Council. The committee would have to be very careful for the next month or two until they saw the exact position, stated Councillor Beanland. It would pay to tar .seal some roads, but the committee could not be expected to do what they did not have the money for.
