HIGH SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY. The fifth anniversary of the Ashburton High School will take place next year, and it is proposed to hold jubilee celebrations at Easter. A tentative programme has been arranged by the committee of the Old Pupils Association, the celebrations lasting from Easter Saturday to the following Tuesday. The functions proposed include a football match and a social reunion, a church service, an official opening and roll call, a garden party, and a jubilee ball and motor drives. It is anticipated that a large number of ex-pupils will assemble for the occasion, and they propose to present a suitable jubilee memorial to their old school. Competitions Society. The annual meeting of the Ashburton Competitions Society was held last evening. The president, Mr A. P. Raven, was in the chair. The annual report stated that the door receipts for the festival last year showed a falling off of £IOO, but the entries showed an increase of 84 compared with the previous year. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £3l 2s 2d, which was considered highly satisfactory. The following officers were elected: Patrons, Mr D. Jones, M.P., the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith) and the chairman of the County Council (Mr H. C. B. WithelD ; president, Mr A. Todd: vice-presidents, Messrs H. A. Humphrey and R. J. Thompson: secretary, Mr R. Capstick; assistant secretary, Mr L. A. Marshall; committee, Mrs A. T. Smith, Messrs A. C. Wilson, J. C. Thompson, D. F. Keir and F. Pritchard: auditor, Mr F. Pritchard. It was decided to hold the next festival on August 25. Newlands Social and Dance. There was a good attendance at a social and dance in aid of the school funds, held in the Newlands School. An enjoyable evening was spent. Prizes donated by Messrs M. M’Millan and G. Whiting, were won by Miss R. Arnst and Mr H. Murchle. After supper a dance was held, the music being supplied by Miss Arnst, and extras by Messrs Sutton and Chapman. Songs were sung by Misses Marsden and Arnst, and Messrs G. Mann and G. Wallis. The card games were controlled by Mr W. Clemens, while Mr Wallis was M.C. The chairman (Mr R. E. F. Hampton) thanked those present for their assistance. Personal. At yesterday’s annual meeting of the Ashburton Gas Company, the chairman, Mr R. Clark, referred to the death some time ago of Mr Albert Roberts, who had been auditor to the company for many years. During that time, the late Mr Roberts had enjoyed the respect and confidence of the directors and shareholders.
