STAND-BY SITE AT LYTTELTON.

WILL BE UNDER CLIFFS ON ROCK FOUNDATIONS. The Minister of Public Works (the lion W. B. Taverner) having announced that the site of the stand-by plant will be at Lyttelton, it is now stated by Mr H. T. Armstrong, M.P., chairman of the Harbour Board, that the plant will be situated on the flat land not far from the dry dock. The position referred to is right under the cliffs, where excavations have been made for quarrying, and there is a _ solid rock foundation to carry the weight of the machinery. The 'reclaimed area will not be used. So far no application had been received officially for the land by the Harbour Board, stated Mr Armstrong this morning. The land on which it was proposed to erect the stand-by plant belonged to the board, but he took it that the Public Works Department had the power to take the land under the Public Works Act. However, the Government would probably negotiate with the Harbour Board with regard to the price.
