HURRICANE SWEEPS FIJI ISLES; HEAVY DAMAGE
Many Native Villages Blown Down And Banana Plantations Wrecked.
(United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received November 25, 11.45 a.m.) SUVA, November 25. A strong gale was experienced in the Fiji group on Sunday afternoon and evening. Suva was undamaged. The centre of the storm seemingly was at Ovalau Island, where many native villages were blown down and Buretu Mission was damaged. A report that two natives were killed and three injured has not been confirmed. Some damage occurred at Loretto Mission and also to plantations, and in Levuka town. The Government steamer Derek is ashore at Savusavu and a cutter is ashore at Lodoni. The track of the storm was sou -sou -east, and the greatest force of the wind seventy-one miles an hour. There was heavy rain. Waidau pineapple plantation and buildings were damaged. In the Rewa district two motor launches and several cane and other lighters were lost. The river is in Rood and it is feared that heavy damage has resulted to native banana plantations as the river is full of Roating banana plants.
