Women Teachers’ Association. At a meeting of the Canterbury Women Teachers’ Association held recently in the Chamber of Commerce Hall, Miss M. E. Harvey presided over a good attendance of members. An interesting address on “ The Teaching of History ” was given by Mr C. T. Aschman. The speaker reminded his audience that the teaching of history was really training the child for citizenship. It was important that the child should learn to understand the present as an outcome of the past, for in noting the advantages of the present he would realise his own personal responsibilities, not only to his fellow-citizens but also towards the future development of civilisation. If the stories of history were presented in their true spirit the child would learn the meaning of service and the idea would be imbued that each individual’s actions counted in the life of the nation. In conclusion Mr Aschman reminded teachers that, at the present time, no history teaching was complete that did not deal with the work of the League of Nations, and the present movement amongst the peoples of the earth towards international peace. On the motion of Miss 3v. Dalziel, a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Aschman for his instructive and inspiring address.
