RUGBY PROFITS FOR N.Z. UNION.

PROVINCE RECEIVES NO SHARE FROM BIG TOUR.

The Wellington Rugby Union shares to the extent of £3154 in the profits of the three matches played against the British Rugby team in Wellington. This share, it is explained, is due solely to the fact that the Wellington Union owns its own ground in the capital

city, and the amount constitutes ground rent, in the form of a percentage of the gate-takings for the following games in which the British team took part:—v. Wellington Province, v. the Maoris, v. New Zealand (fourth test).

The Otago Union also owns the Carisbrook Ground in Dunedin, and by virtue of that w’ill receive portion of the profits of the two matches played in the southern city.

The Canterbury Union leases Lancaster Park from the Lancaster Park Board of Control, which has received the ground rents for the games played here. The expenses incurred by the Canterbury Union in billeting the teams here have been paid by the New Zealand Union, which took all the profits. That the Canterbury Union would probably show a loss on the year’s working was a statement made by the president (Mr A. E. M’Phail) at a recent meeting of the union. It was stated then that Canterbury received no share of- the profits. of the matches against the British team, and that the loss of two playing Saturdays as far as the Canterburj’- Union was concerned was a serious matter from the point of view of gate takings.
