WELLINGTON MAN TALKS TO LONDON OPERATOR. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, October 9. It takes a lot to impress people nowadays and the news that W ellington can talk to London will probably make someone ask “What next, and then it will be accepted with the same equanimity that we hear of things that, a few generations ago, were as unreal as the magic carpet or Aladdin s lamp. Wellington’s talk with the heart of the Empire was heard in Auckland by Mr I. Meltzer. of Herne Bay, Ponsonby, who is a wireless enthusiast. It happened last evening at about 7.15. Mr Meltzer writes:— “Wellington was transmitting on 27 metres to VK ME Sydney, the powerful short wave station of Amalgamated Wireless Ltd., which relayed the voice through to London on 28.5 metres. The London terminal, GBP (Rugby) was transmitting on 27.7 metres and Sydney was relaying the message to Wellington on 37 metres. _ “Whilst I am not permitted to pub lish details of the conversation, I xnav say that it came through remarkably well, whether I listened to Wellington or to London direct or to Sydney s wave lengths. The speaker in Wellington was undoubtedly thrilled with the experience of conversing across 12.500 miles of space to Mr Scarborough, who was speaking from a point fifteen miles outside of London. It was certainly wonderful and almost uncanny to participate in this miracle, even as a listener.” As soon as the experimental stage has concluded, ordinary telephone sub scribers in the main centres of the Dominion will be able to carry on ordinary conversation with friends in London and later with other centres in England and the Continent. It seems hard to believe that the Empire's furthest outpost has at last made contact with its nerve centre; but it has come to pass.
