BUTTER PRICES AND A RATE WAR.
“ FIGHT TO A FINISH,” SAYS ONE MANAGER
Butter fell to Is 5d in retail shops yesterday in symipathy with a rate war that is going on between Canterbury factories.
For some time past, it is understood, there has been price-cutting by factories, but it has now reached the stage when the price at which butter is sold to the grocers (Is 2£d) is said to represent a loss to the factories. Nevertheless, the rate war is not relaxed.
Better Ended. 4 ‘ Yes,” said one factory- manager toda>*, “ this rate-cutting is not in the interests of the farmers, but it is better to clear up the situation as soon as possible and you may say from me that it is a fight to a finish.’’
