ROAD BUILDING IN CANTERBURY.

ESTIMATES APPROVED BY HIGHWAYS BOARD. For the year 1930-31 the Main Highways Board has allocated £28,000 for expenditure on construction and £27,000 for maintenance in the No. 13 district. The Council established under the Main Highways Act met yesterday afternoon to consider the estimates for work which will absorb this money. As submitted these were unanimously approved. The total amount voted for construction in the district for the year 1929-30 was £36-341, and expended £47,691. The estimate of the total cost of completing the present proposals, including liability to March 31, 1930, is £53,371; of this amount the share of the local bodies is £3647, and that of the Main Highways Board £28,024. In regard to maintenance the amount voted for 1929-30 was £38,924, and expended £29,966. The estimated cost of. completing the present proposals, including the liability at March 31, 1930, is £36,356; of this amount the local bodies’ share is £11,283, and that of the Main Highways Board £25,073. At yesterday’s meeting of the No. 13 District Highways Council the following representatives were present: Messrs F. Langbein (District Public Works Engineer), in the chair, N. Campbell (Waipara County Council), M. Bethell (Amuri), A. T. Murray (Awatere), J. H. L. Hiatt (Cheviot), and J. Simpson (assistant road engineer, Public Works Department). Construction.
