MAORI PEOPLE TAKE TOUCHING FAREWELL.

(Speoial to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON. July 10. Thrilling and touching was the Maori farewell to' the late Sir Joseph Ward in Parliament Building to-day. one hundred representatives of the Maori people gathered. They came from the Waikato, Taranaki, Wanganui, Taupo, East Coast, Hawke s Bay, Otaki and the South Island. The sentries with reversed arms who had been standing guard at the bier were by the Prime Minister (the Hon G. W. Forbes) and the Minister for Native Affairs (Sir A. T. Ngata), who stood with bowed heads while the impressive ceremonial proceeded. As the party approached the casket the women, with mourners’ wreaths around their heads, commenced singing one of the sweetest of the old laments, Turuhtra Hmeiwhakina leading in a rich alto. Ihe minor strain was taken up by hien s voices, and the words were repeated as the party slowly filed past, ending with a loud shout of farewell as they lost sight of the flower-strewn coffin. The translation of the lament is as follows: . , . , “Pass on, our elder, from the wor.d life. A “From the murmurs of the many and the envy of thousands. “The great fish has left its recess. “Antares’ place is a gaping void.
