WORKMEN ARE BUSY ON OLD CLOCK TOWER.

PROCESS OF SHIFTING TO NEW SITE IS UNDER WAY.

The clock tower in High Street still attracts the gaze of numbers of people, but the reason is not the same as a year ago, when it was serving the humble but very necessary duty of timepiece. To-day people watch the workmen who are pulling the old structure to pieces preparatory to its removal to a site at the intersection of Victoria, Durham and Salisbury Streets.

For months the clock tower, complete save that the hands of the clock were missing and that it served no purpose whatsoever, stood on its old site waiting for the City Fathers to make up their minds what to do in the matter, while well-meaning citizens were giving directly contrasting views on the subject, and making cutting remarks about the alleged lack of decision displaved in this and similar matters by the powers that be.

Now that a site has been determined on, workmen, sitting on the scaffolding that surrounds the structure, are doing their fell work on an old-established institution. There is only the shell left, and it will not be long before the clock tower is reassembled on the “ spot marked X ” in Victoria Street. Many people were grateful for it in High Street, and it is possible that just as many will be thankful for the right time in Victoria Street.
