Fireworks And Economics.

M° s l t . BUSINESS MEN lose when their stock goes up in smoke; but George Ah Chang went bankrupt because his stock did not go up in smoke. But that’s the way with fireworks. They are risky stock for him who hath, and on festive nights sometimes even for him who hath not. It is possible, however, that the Chinese does his best business in crackers, that are bought for a penny, and therefore he suffers when the pennies fall no more into the chubby fist. For economic booms are a bit like rockets. They leave a flatness behind, and the stoppage of the little dribbling pennies are the first symptoms of the aftermath. There were once two brothers. They were each given a shilling to spend and went on an expedition round the shops. One returned with his pockets bulging; but the other merely said that he saw nothing that he liked the look of better than his own shilling. That story has no moraL It is only a story. Cheer up.
