LAWYER HAS ROLE OF COUNSEL AND DEFENDANT
Mr F. W. Johnston, a well-known solicitor, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning in the dual role of defendant and counsd. For leaving his car parked over the time limit, he was fined 5s and costs. When the clerk of the Court called the charge, Mr Johnston rose and said: “ I appear for the defendant, if your Worship pleases.” Continuing, Mr Johnston said that his “ client had gone to the City Council about his license. There was a big queue, and he had to get away to a Safety First campaign conference. There he became immersed in work for the public good. “ I hope you will tell your * client ’ not to do it again,’ said the Magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley), smiling. “ I will impress that upon him,” replied Mr Johnston. “It will cost your ‘ client' 5s and costs 35,” said the Magistrate.
